Still Learning!

September 15th 2009 00:06
When I was at high school, many moons ago, I did practically no homework and got the results you'd expect. Pretty average. But now that I'm studying again, I'm quite enjoying working at home to do my assignments, even though at TAFE for the course I'm doing, the only options are Pass, Do Again and Fail.

I get the feeling I would have to not hand up any work for weeks and weeks before it would become a problem, whereas when I was at high school I would have been in strife with my teachers quick smart. So the pressure to get work done isn't as great as it was, but I still feel the need to get it done and get it right.

I had lots of other things that were far more important than schoolwork in the 1970s. I can't really remember what they were, and those I can remember I'm not telling you about! Now though, getting my schoolwork done is very important, and I'm even getting better about not putting everything off until the last minute.

I think having a computer and the Internet are great for my studying, and perhaps if they had been available back then I might have got more into schoolwork. I doubt it though. I wasn't destined to be one of the clever kids, just one of the 'could do better' kids.

What about you? What thoughts do you have on schoolwork then and now? I'd love to hear what you think.

Keep your Loved Ones Safe

September 11th 2009 00:08
If you have a swimming pool, what is one thing you should do to keep your loved ones safe? By loved ones, I mean your children and your pets, and your small relatives. Children flock to a swimming pool and you can all have many joyful hours playing with them in the cooling water.
But the fun times end with summer, and the pool just sits there, unused for months on end. Small children, and small pets, particularly dogs though remember the fun times and don’t agree that the fun times have to end, and they will sometimes try to have a swim when no-one else is there to tell them not to.
There are lots of things you need to do for winter maintenance if you have a swimming pool whether in ground or above ground. Installing a safety pool cover should be a part of that winter maintenance.

The consequences otherwise can be terrible. There is nothing in the world more awful than the death of your beloved child, and the realisation that the death is preventable and partly your fault could be impossible to live with.
So what should you do so that this never happens to you? Get your pool a cover, that's what you should do. Safety Pool Covers - If our pool had a cover back when our naughty litter of schnauzer puppies snuck through a hole in the fence, little Octopussy would be alive. She was a gorgeous little puppy, just 8 weeks old but showing all the qualities of a potential show champion.
Some inattention from the people in her family, and she was in the pool and gone from our lives. A pool cover would have saved her life. It’s as simple as that. I shudder to think of it being my son instead of a puppy. I love our dogs, but they are nothing compared to my own child. I would lose most of my reason for living if I lost my son.
Our son is old enough not to need the safety of a pool cover now – he’s a much better swimmer than me, but I know that a safety pool cover is still an excellent thing to have to keep your pool safe. If you have a pool, you need a safety pool cover.

What I Want to do When I Grow Up

August 24th 2009 22:33
I may have finally found what I want to do when I grow up. It's only taken me 46 years, but at last, I am doing something positive about getting a job that will satisfy my needs for a meaningful career.

I have worked in the Public Service, which came close to what I want, but in a way far too structured for my creative self. I have worked in the Pet Food Industry which was interesting enough and had elements of what I want, but also some elements that felt wrong to me.

It felt like I would never get the kind of job that would work for me. And then the opportunity came up for further schooling, paid for by the government, and I decided to give it a go.

Now, three weeks after I began doing a Certificate IV at TAFE, I am learning things that have direct relevance to what I want to do, and I'm loving learning!

Of course, it is impacting on my online time - I have to do homework! - but my online time is not how I want to earn a living. Little bits of money are welcome of course, but proper pay the bills easily type earning is not going to happen for me online.

I like meeting and greeting with people too much to be able to give my online career the time and effort required for real money. But once I have my Cert IV I can pick and choose the jobs that interest me. The qualification opens up many different kinds of jobs. Working with Youth, the mentally ill, the elderly. Working in the community, in institutions, in Councils, lots of different options.

I'm excited!

Whether we realise it or not, we all have pests in our lives. Some of them may be people who ruin your life, or who irritate you. I’m not talking about those sorts of pests, I’m talking about the little things that invade our homes and cause annoyance, irritations, rashes, and even structural damage to homes, sometimes.

Those little creepy crawlies are not just out there, they’re inside your house as well. You may not see them, but they could be nibbling on the wooden frame of your house, or on your clothes in the wardrobe

Which Pet do You Pat?

August 4th 2009 23:37
I'm a dog person, no doubts about that. I've lived with two cats, in earlier years. I have a friend who is a dog breeder and a cat breeder who has children who have had rats and mice as pets.

The dog lady

August 4th 2009 10:28
I am proud of the many hats I wear. I am the dog lady, the poetry person, the bread tag person. But it's a weird thing that I keep writing about cats or commenting on blogs about cats. I don't really like cats. I am a dog person. Cats are lazy, contrary, selfish.

People love them, but I don't. So why do I write about them? I have this fear that I may have been a cat lover in a previous life. Maybe not. Perhaps I'm jealous of the cats. They carry on in their feline way, never giving a toss about anybody else

Does anyone else get chilblains? Does anyone know a quick and cheap way to get rid of chilblains.

I've been searching for a super quick cure on the internet, because I am afflicted, yet again, with chilblains. My blood doesn't always work terribly hard at getting to my tootsies, and my toes consequently swell up and go bright read and then purple in response. This is called chilblains

Ya Gotta Know When to Hold ‘em

July 29th 2009 22:04
I have fond memories of playing poker with my brothers when I was a kid. From memory we played using counters from our snakes and ladders game, and I didn’t always win. The cards were against me.

My father played card games too, but his game of preference was euchre, a game I never got a handle on at all, too confusing for a twelve year old girl. It was too complicated, and too important for Dad and his mates to spend time trying to explain the rules to me, a mere girl

Getting on with the Second Draft

July 25th 2009 00:12
My novel has been languishing on my computer's depths, I have barely even looked at it. I was supposed to be working on it all last semester when I was doing a writing workshop with Jeff Guess.

The workshop members would get together once a week with Jeff Guess and we would all work on our special project in our own time. My stated special project was to work on the second draft of my novel in progress. When we all got together with Jeff we would do writing exercises
