Mood Changes With The Seasons
October 29th 2007 19:51
It's the end of October and the temperature has finally begun to fall to a more fall like pattern. Since we have missed much of the color changing that is so popular in the northeast it's easy to think that we are in for a very bad winter, cold weather and too much snow. This is all speculation of course, but it brings attention to the fact that many people who live with depression and seasonal affective disorder, this time of year causes more stress and chances for a relapse or more depressive episodes.
With the coming of winter come shorter days, more darkness and the much talked about cabin fever. In these instances it is difficult to keep our mind of the brightness that can be found in life, not only has the sun escaped our vision outside, but it now becomes more difficult to find that light within ourselves. As the dreary cold weather takes hold, there is less opportunity to spend the day outside, to walk through the park and enjoy what Mother Nature has given us. Instead we sit inside, turn on all the lights to try and combat the darkness that seem to exist for too many hours.
There are some who enjoy this time of year, the chance to sit in front of the fire, curl up on the couch with a blanket and hot chocolate. While those are wonderful pass times, you can't do that for the 5 or 6 months winter can often last. The best thing to do is find ways to keep the sun shining for you. Using what they call 'sun lamps,' treat yourself to something you've been wanting for sometime, take up a new hobby, and join a reading group.
The most important thing is too keep the mind busy in the hopes of convincing it all is well, this too shall pass and the sun will shine again, in no time we will be looking for the first robin in the yard and buds appearing on the trees. Then we will know that spring is not far off and we have made it through another winter - mission accomplished!!!
