Still Learning!

September 15th 2009 00:06
When I was at high school, many moons ago, I did practically no homework and got the results you'd expect. Pretty average. But now that I'm studying again, I'm quite enjoying working at home to do my assignments, even though at TAFE for the course I'm doing, the only options are Pass, Do Again and Fail.

I get the feeling I would have to not hand up any work for weeks and weeks before it would become a problem, whereas when I was at high school I would have been in strife with my teachers quick smart. So the pressure to get work done isn't as great as it was, but I still feel the need to get it done and get it right.

I had lots of other things that were far more important than schoolwork in the 1970s. I can't really remember what they were, and those I can remember I'm not telling you about! Now though, getting my schoolwork done is very important, and I'm even getting better about not putting everything off until the last minute.

I think having a computer and the Internet are great for my studying, and perhaps if they had been available back then I might have got more into schoolwork. I doubt it though. I wasn't destined to be one of the clever kids, just one of the 'could do better' kids.

What about you? What thoughts do you have on schoolwork then and now? I'd love to hear what you think.

I enjoyed learning but I certainly got very bored with school. I think it has something to do with interest in boys and parties on offer. School then became SO boring.

I don't think it is any more interesting now for most 15, 16, 17 or 18 year olds. It is just that they are forced more to go on to HSC and sometimes higher. The trouble is that when our educational institutions became "businesses" the main focus became "passing people no matter what".

I don't know that this is really a good thing.
