What a crazy time!

October 27th 2008 22:31
It's times like these that make me especially glad Im an australian, living in a small country Australian town. I can sit back and watch it on the TV screen and laugh at what those crazy Americans have done this time.
Of course, it does impact on me personally too, and it's a pain having to pay more, and more, and more again, for almost everything. But the price of petrol is going down, interest rates are going down. Call me Pollyanna, but I can see good things in some of this.
One thing that really gets me though is the lack of contrition from the stockbrokers who caused this mess - back in the Great Depression, they were leaping from tall buildings! What are they doing now? Probably thinking about how they can stiff the common folk and keep raking in the money.

Anyway, I think we should look on this time as a chance to learn new ways of scrimping and saving, and feeling really proud of ourselves later when we can say - 'Oh, yeah they were hard times, but I grew my own vegetables, and we got on just fine.'
Anyway, Obama is going to be President and the world will be a better place!

I think Australians feel that we're too far away to really feel the impact, but the Aussie economy is, necessarily, tied to the global market. I see that China has reduced their consumption of raw materials from Australia, which will impact the entire country...

My state, South Australia, has been living on the sales of raw materials, and I'm well aware of the impact of that. But it seems Premier Mike Rann and Treasurer Kevin Foley aren't keen on spending any money on what we, the voters, actually want and need anyway, so we haven't been living the high life off it.

I'd like to see some material on what the State Opposition would do differently. That's going to be another interesting election.
I love election time!
